Vice-President Alik L. Alik attends funeral service for Sgt. Sapuro Brightly Nena

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): October 25, 2012 - On Monday, October 08, 2012, the Honorable Alik L. Alik, Vice-President of the Federated States of Micronesia was amongst the local and visiting dignitaries and officials who attended the honor guard service for the late Sgt. Sapuro Brightly Nena.

The service was held at the Moses Mackwelung Gymnasium in Tofol, Kosrae, where dignitaries and family members received the opportunity to bid their respect and final farewell to Sgt. Nena. Sgt. Nena was among the four US servicemen who were tragically ambushed and killed in September 16, 2012 during an attack at a remote checkpoint in Afghanistan.

In conveying his personal condolences and sympathies to the parents and families of Sgt. Nena, Vice-President Alik expressed that "Sergeant Nena was one of our country's young men and women who took upon themselves the challenge of joining the US Armed Forces, so that they can, in their own small way, contribute to the continuing global campaign to uphold our democratic values, and universal principles of liberty and freedom". He further mentioned that as a decorated soldier, "Sergeant Sapuro Nena will be remembered by his country as a young dedicated and courageous citizen, by the family as a loving and caring son, and by his peers as a brave warrior."

Vice-President Alik also conveyed his personal appreciation to the US Ambassador to the FSM Her Excellency Doria Marie Rosen, Brigadier General Billy Don Farris and the members of the military casualty unit for all the support that have been extended to the parents and family of Sgt. Nena. Her Excellency Doria Marie Rosen and Brigadier General Billy Don Farris were among the dignitaries attending the service.

In closing his statement, he delivered a message from President Emanuel Mori to the family of Sgt. Nena, which read, "On behalf of the people and Government of the Federated States of Micronesia, Vice President Alik and I extend our sincerest condolences and our deepest sympathies for the tragic passing of your beloved son, Sergeant Sapuro Brightly Nena. Sergeant Nena's bravery and valor are evident by his tenure as a member of the US Armed Forces, fighting to defend freedom and bring peace for all humanity. He was a true hero of the Federated States of Micronesia, and his courage and bravery will be remembered."

Sgt. Sapuro Brightly Nena is a native son of Kosrae State, Federated States of Micronesia. He enlisted in the US Army in 2008, and served for four years. He died at the young age of 25.
