FSM Consul General pays courtesy call on Governor Calvo of Guam

Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): November 25, 2011 - FSM Consul General Robert Ruecho met with honorable Eddie Baza Calvo, Governor of the Territory of Guam at the Governor complex in Adelup on Tuesday, November 22 at 10:30 am. The meeting was the FSM Consul General's first meeting in his official capacity in Guam. During the visit Consul General Ruecho expressed his regrets on the delay of his first official call on the Governor. Governor Calvo stated that he was aware of the logistical difficulties in setting up for this meeting as he spent most of the last two months on other official travel undertakings.

During the course of the meeting, Consul General Ruecho conveyed his commitment to working closely with the Calvo/Tenorio Administration to better assist the FSM community in Guam and the larger Guam community. Other topics of mutual interests and various issues were discussed during the call including Compact Impact. Consul General Ruecho conveyed to the Governor FSM's commitment and collaborative effort in addressing compact impact concerns and other issues relating to FSM citizens.

In acknowledging the advantage that the FSM holds as a sovereign country with access to the international community, Governor Calvo seeks the support of the FSM Government in promoting Micronesia-wide interests, which include Guam's. Governor Calvo also stated that as Guam pushes for the Chinese and Russian visa waiver program, he recognizes the potential such program would create to our region's economy in the tourism and other private sector areas.

Consul General Ruecho on behalf of President Mori and the FSM Government expressed his appreciation to the Government and the people of Guam for hosting many citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia. While cognizant of the various implications of FSM migrations into Guam, both Governor and Consul General assured each other to work closely in addressing issues of mutual interests and concerns. Governor Calvo invited Consul General Ruecho for more meetings and discussions in the days to come to further enhance collaboration between our two governments.

Accompanying Consul General Ruecho to the meeting was Mr. Robson Romolow, Senior Foreign Service Officer at the FSM Guam Consulate Office.
