Neth continues as Deputy of HESA

PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Information Service): December 16, 2003 - Midion Gideon Neth has been sworn in to maintain the post of Deputy Secretary of the Department of Health, Education and Social Affairs (HESA) of the Government of the Federated States of Micronesia.

The Oath of Office was administered by Chief Justice Andon l. Amaraich to Neth on November 25 in a ceremony in the President's Cabinet room. Neth was sworn to uphold the "laws and Constitution of the nation" serving the wishes of the people in the performance of his respective position. Chief Justice Amaraich advised Neth that the Oath is a commitment of immense responsibilities that must be "remembered in our daily lives."

President Joseph J. Urusemal echoed this sentiment by emphasizing to Neth that the expectation for his Cabinet is, "commitment and dedication to service." He said the Department of HESA plays a crucial role in the development of the nation, and therefore looks towards Secretary - Dr. Jefferson Benjamin and Deputy Neth, to ensure a healthy and educated population.

Deputy Secretary Neth held the same post during the Administration of former President Leo A. Falcam. Neth's background include: In 1979, Neth received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education from the University of Guam. After graduation, he returned to Pohnpei and worked for the next five years with the State Department of Education, breaking in first as an elementary teacher, then on to a high school teacher and eventually becoming the Administrator for Federal Programs.

Neth switched gears in early 1984 when he was elected as a Senator from the Municipality of Madolenihmw to the Pohnpei State Legislature. He served the seat for the next 10 years establishing laws to manage and govern the affairs of Pohnpei State. Within that period, Neth chaired Committees on Education and Cultural Affairs; Health and Social Services and also served as Vice-Chairs on Committees on Finance; and Judiciary and Governmental Operations. Late 1997, he became Chief of Pohnpei State Division of Commerce and Industry until last year when he was appointed as the Special Assistant to the President for Disaster Coordination.

Mr. Neth is married to the former Lihse Santos, they have 4 sons; Mitchell, Midsen, Reskey, Midion Jr., and 2 daughters; Melissa Lynn and Iolany.
