Congress to host Micronesian Legislative ConferencePALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Congress): September 4, 2008 - Speaker Isaac V. Figir of the 15th Congress of the Federated States of Micronesia has invited the presiding officers of the four state legislatures to Palikir next week for the Micronesian Legislative Conference (MLC). The conference as scheduled, will be from September 8 -10 at the National Government Central Facilities in Palikir. Speaker Figir's invitation letter noted that the conference would be "a good opportunity for the leadership of all the legislative bodies, state and national, to meet and confer on pressing issues facing us." Under the theme "Critical Challenges, United Response" the three-day conference is expected to address recent communications from the United States Congress along with discussions on various pressing issues ranging from legislative matters to the nation's energy and fuel situation to amended Compact related matters. A briefing on the recent meetings of the Joint Economic Management Committee is anticipated along with various presentations on pertinent management and policy issues. The MLC was established to further strengthen the rapport between the legislative branches of the five governments, and at the same time provide a platform for the legislative bodies to discuss and define solutions for issues of mutual concerns. |
