FSM Congress News, September 13, 2005PALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM Congress): September 13, 2005 - The Second Regular Session of the 14th Congress met for the first time this morning at 9:45, with Peter M. Christian presiding. President of the FSM, His Excellency Joseph J. Urusemal, Vice President Redley Killion, chief Justice Andon Amaraich, members of the President's cabinet and representatives of the diplomatic corps were in attendance at the morning' s meeting. Other dignitaries and citizens in attendance were introduced and recognized by Members. On the floor during discussion, Senator Peter Sitan of the Mortlocks asked all other Members, in addition to the large number of bills and resolutions before them during the session, to consider the impact of the rising cost of living of FSM citizens. He stated that higher fuel prices have led to increase in other areas, and that Congress should consider ways to ease the burden despite it being a time of limited resources. Senator Dohsis Halbert of Pohnpei agreed with these statements, and asked that a statement he had prepared on the matter be inserted into the day's journal. In other developments, Speaker Christian appointed Vice Speaker Claude H. Phillip of Kosrae to chair the special committee to wait on the President. Senators Isaac V. Figir of Yap, Dohsis Halbert of Pohnpei and Roosevelt D. Kansou of Chuuk were also appointed to the committee. Congress went to recess at 10:10 A.M. and will reconvene tomorrow at 10:00 A.M. |
