FSM and Japan Signs Exchange of Note for 58,000,000 Japanese Yen GrantPalikir, Pohnpei (Department of Foreign Affairs): January 31, 2008 - January 25, 2008 Just two days after the hand over ceremony of the recently completed Weno Harbor Project, a signing ceremony was also held at the FSM Department of Foreign Affairs between the FSM and Japan Government for a grant of 58,000,000 Japanese Yen to be used towards the Detail design phase of the Improvement of the Pohnpei International Airport project. Secretary Lorin Robert signed on behalf of the FSM Government with Mr. Toshio Omura, Charge' d' affaires of the Embassy of Japan. The proposed project scope includes the runway extension, runway safety enhancement, and rehabilitation and expansion of terminal facilities and apron. This is a highly anticipated project that will contribute immensely to the social and economic development of the FSM. In a short statement, Mr. Omura congratulated the FSM Government and Pohnpei State for being the recipient of the project. Mr. Omura looks forward to the next phase which is the implementation of the project. He stressed the importance of our two countries continued cooperation to work together. In responding to Mr. Omura, Secretary Robert indicated the Government's deep appreciation for the project and expressed anticipation of the implementation of the project. Secretary Robert reaffirmed the FSM National Government's commitment and support for the project. In attendance was the newly elected Governor of Pohnpei State, The Honorable John Ehsa. Governor Ehsa concluded the ceremony with a toast in honor of the signing ceremony and his support for the Project. Also present at the signing ceremony were officials from the FSM Department of Foreign Affairs, FSM Department of Resource and Development, FSM Department of Transportation, Communications & Infrastructure, Pohnpei Port Authority, Embassy of Japan and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). |
