Austria Presents Its Credence to FSMPALIKIR, Pohnpei (FSM INFORMATION SERVICE): February 13, 2004 - On February 2, 2004, Ambassador Designate H.E. Hans Demel of the Republic of Austria presented his credentials to H.E. Joseph J. Urusemal, President of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), in Palikir, at the Department of Foreign Affairs' Conference Room. Ambassador Hans Demel is the first Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Austria to present his credentials to the President of FSM. He is currently based in Canberra, Australia. In his presentation, Ambassador Hans Demel stated that now global questions are more and more important and no country can afford to neglect any region in the world. Therefore to act together as partners is greatly needed. He added that it would be irresponsible if we did not find solutions to the global problems existing today in order to eliminate hatred, despair, and with them extremism and terrorism. President Urusemal responded with a warm welcome and stated that the FSM values the cordial relationship that exist between Austria and FSM since the establishment of the diplomatic relation on July 1, 1992. He further elaborated, "We are both members of the United Nations and we are both committed in the global effort to combat terrorism, fight drugs and human trafficking, and protect the environment through sustainable development, among other." President Urusemal also thanked the Government of Austria for its active role in the area of the framework of the world summit of sustainable development that was held in Johannesburg. And than added, "In this respect, I am confident that during your tenure as Ambassador to the FSM, we will work together in advancing these and many other issues of mutual interest and make our relations even more fruitful." In closing President Urusemal asked Ambassador Demel to convey his greetings and best wishes for the personal good health of President Dr. Thomas Klestil and for the continuing prosperity of the people of Austria. The program ended at noon and was followed by a load full of courtesy calls and site visits. |
