FSM and Australia Sign Memorandum of UnderstandingPalikir, POHNPEI (Dept. of Foreign Affairs): February 21, 2008 - On Wednesday February 20, 2008, the Honorable Lorin S. Robert, Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the Federated States of Micronesia, and Australian Ambassador to the FSM, Her Excellency Susan Cox, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the two governments. The MOU is aimed to govern all development cooperation programs provided by the Government of Australia to the FSM to their ensure that such programs are effectively delivery and facilitated in a coordinated manner, as well as to ensure that such programs is streamlined with the developmental needs of the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). During the signing ceremony, both Secretary Robert and Ambassador Cox took the opportunity to reiterate the good relations that exists between the two countries. Secretary Robert further emphasized the importance of the intent of the MOU as it reflects ongoing efforts of the FSM Government in synergize overseas development assistance to its economic development goals and objectives. Following the signing ceremony, Ambassador Cox paid a courtesy call on the Honorable Vice-President Alik L. Alik. During the call, Vice-President Alik conveyed appreciation for the valuable assistance being provided to the FSM and his wish to continue a close engagement with Australia on international, regional and sub-regional matters. The Vice-President further indicated the need to link regional development assistance, such as the Pacific Plan, to ensure that its supports ongoing national development priorities in for of the FSM's Strategic Development Plan (SDP). With the opportunity, the Vice-President also conveyed the FSM appreciation for Australia's continued assistance rendered to the FSM's surveillance program which has been very successful since its inception. |
