 FSM Government opens embassy in ChinaBeijing, CHINA (Department of Foreign Affairs): May 10, 2007 - The delegation, headed by Mr. Carlson D. Apis of the Department of Foreign Affairs arrived in Beijing, China on 25 April 2007 and on 27 April 2007, Mr. Apis, presented his credentials to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as the Chargé d'Affairs, a.i. for the new resident mission in Beijing. The Federated States of Micronesia and the People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations on 11 September 1989. After seventeen years of close cooperative relations, both governments dubbed the relations a "model relationship", a description that characterizes the prevailing relationship between the FSM and China. Building on this model relationship, H.E. President Joseph J. Urusemal decided to take this relationship to new heights by opening an Embassy in Beijing. The People's Republic China currently has an embassy located in Palikir, Pohnpei. The FSM Embassy is located at the Jianguomenwai Diplomatic Compound in Beijing. The exact address for the Embassy is as follows: Embassy of the Federated States of Micronesia Mr. Apis, formerly the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Asian Affairs, now serves as the Chargé d'Affairs, a.i.. while His Excellency Kasio E. Mida is the FSM Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to China, cross accredited from his resident post in Tokyo, Japan.. The 15th FSM Congress will be considering during their upcoming sessions the President's 2008 Fiscal Year Budget which includes funding for a resident ambassador and a first secretary for the Embassy. Mr. Apis was accompanied to Beijing by Mr. Edigar Isaac, Assistant Secretary, Department of Finance and Administration and Ms. Elsiner Yarofaisug, Administrative Officer, Department of Foreign Affairs to assist in the administrative set up of the Embassy. |
