Alfons of Pohnpei clinches gold in Micro All-aroundPalikir, POHNPEI (Micro Games/FSM Information Service): June 30, 2006 - Eugene Alfons of Pohnpei State has been declared the winner of the Micro All-Around, the signature competition of the Micronesian Games currently underway in the Northern Marianas Islands from June 23 - July 1. The Micro All-Around is a sporting event unique to the Pacific, which challenges athletes from the Micronesian islands to a competition of traditional islands skills which involves spear throwing, swimming, diving, coconut climbing, coconut husking and coconut grating. With Alfons of Pohnpei winning the Gold, the Silver goes to Atti Atti of the Marshall Islands and Stalin Stanley of Palau receives the Bronze. In addition to the Micro All-Around, traditional events like Track and Field, Swimming, Basketball, Baseball, Tennis and Volleyball are all part of the sporting competitions of the Micronesian Games. The Micronesian Games are organized for the island nations and territories in the Micronesian archipelago: Chuuk, Guam, Kiribati, Kosrae, Marshall Islands, Nauru, Northern Marianas, Palau, Pohnpei and Yap. With the exception of Nauru, all the Micronesian islands are represented at the Micronesian Games 2006 expected to wrap up this weekend in Northern Marianas.
