FSM Supreme Court celebrates silver anniversaryPalikir, POHNPEI (FSM Information Services): July 12, 2006 - The Supreme Court of the Federated States of Micronesia commemorates its 25th Anniversary today. In celebration of 25 years of service to the nation, the normally reserved Branch of the FSM Government, flung its doors wide open today for a little pomp and circumstance. To herald the Day's celebration, the FSM National Police executed an elaborate "Raising of the Colors" ceremony, followed closely by a rendition of the National Anthem by Pohnpei's own local artist - Daniel Isaac. The Lt. Governor of Pohnpei State, Jack Yakana delivered the opening remarks to welcome the colorful collage of civil servants and civilians alike, government officials of local, state and nation affiliations and an array of foreign and local citizens joined in the commemoration of the Supreme Court's progress as the National Judiciary and Justice System. The National Leadership provided a distinguished panel of guest speakers to address the Silver Anniversary commemorations: President Joseph J. Urusemal, Speaker Peter M. Christian of the 14th FSM Congress and Chief Justice Andon L. Amarich of the FSM Supreme Court. The commemoration of July 12 has traditionally involved a Law Day debate among the high schools in the four states. To that end, the topic for this year's Law Day debate is issue of dual-citizenship. Debate teams from the Saram en Chuuk, PICS High School in Pohnpei and Yap High School will battle out the topic to round out the day's celebrations with the winners to be announced at a dinner reception at Nan Tehlik Restaurant later this evening. |
