Vice President Alik Pays Official Visit to ChinaBeijing, China (FSM Embassy, Beijing): July 8, 2009 - At the invitation of the Chinese Vice President, Ji Xinping, Vice President Alik Alik arrived into China's capital, Beijing, to start off his official visit which was scheduled for 08 to 13 July 2009. On the day of arrival, Vice President Alik paid a courtesy call on China's top political advisor, Mr. Jia Qinglin, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), China's top political advisory body. During the courtesy meeting, both sides acknowledged the model relationship that exists between FSM and China and both highlighted and expressed their appreciations for the fruitful cooperation throughout the 20 years of diplomatic relationship. The Vice President expressed his appreciation to the Chinese Government for the invitation and looked forward to working closely with the Chinese government on issues of mutual concern on the bilateral, regional, and international levels. He made specific reference to technical grants provided to assist in the FSM's infrastructure development and thanked the Chairman for their consistent support. He also made mention of the FSM's efforts in the Climate Change negotiations and requested for China's assistance. The Vice President also extended his appreciation for the excellent work done by Ambassador Liu Fei in the FSM and looked forward to working with Ambassador-designate Zhang Weiping when he assumes his post in Pohnpei. During the meeting, Chairman Jia stated that China stands ready to build upon the 20th anniversary to promote and advance FSM-China relations to new heights. The Chairman also indicated that China will continue to support and provide assistance to the FSM and will continue to work with the FSM to intensify high level exchanges and cooperation. Chairman Jia expressed appreciation to the FSM for its continued adherence and commitment to the One China policy. Present during the meeting were Charge' d' Affaires a.i. Carl D. Apis, Kosrae State Floor Leader Semeon Phillip, State Senator Robert Taulung, State Senator Gibson Siba, Mayor Maheta Kilafwasru, Mayor Alik Livaie, and First Secretary Vincent Sivas. |
