Marine Research and Sampling Study in the Waters of YapPOHNPEI, Palikir (FSM Information Service): September 2000 - The Marine Biotechnology Institute, Co. Ltd has proposed to carry out a marine research and sampling study in the coastal waters of Yap State. The purpose of the research and sampling is to develop a mechanism on conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity through isolation of the associated bacteria with marine algae and invertebrates, according to a communication from President Leo A. Falcam to Yap Governor Vincent Figir. The President asked the Governor to review the project documents and provide his advise and recommendations to the FSM who will convey to its Embassy in Japan. "This," he said, "from our reading of the documents, is not a novel project as it is a follow up to the research carried out by MBI in Yap in 1994; however, one that may warrant endorsement of the traditional leadership or at least those whose water areas would be engaged with the research." Adding, "We leave that to your discretion." For purpose of record keeping and monitoring, the President encouraged that, copies of the permit when issued and reports when completed on both phases of the project be provided to the FSM. |
