USS Fitzgerald joins Pohnpei Liberation Day CelebrationsPalikir, POHNPEI (FSM Information Service): September 9, 2005 - The United States Navy warship - USS Fitzgerald, called port in Pohnpei this weekend where Navy personnel are anticipated to join in the State's Liberation Day Celebrations. Pohnpei's Liberation Day on September 11th is Pohnpei's celebration of the end of the Pacific War. These celebrations normally involve the various municipalities in Pohnpei where they gather to compete in different sporting competitions. It is anticipated that USS Fitzgerald crew members will participate in friendly exhibition games of softball, volleyball and basketball scheduled throughout the weekend. In addition to the Liberation Day Celebrations, various community service projects have been scheduled for assistance by crew members of the USS Fitzgerald. These projects include renovations of three school buildings in the municipalities of Madolenihmw, Sokehs and U. Base in Yokosuka Japan, and under the command of Commanding Officer - CDR David W. Hughes, the USS Fitzgerald is a fast warship that safeguard larger ships in a fleet or battle group. In light of the USS Cole incident, the US Embassy strongly discourages the public from entering within a radius of 200ft from the USS Fitzgerald. |
