JICA Supports FSM Clean-Up CampaignPalikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): September 27, 2010 - Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Public Information Office - JICA): September 27, 2010 - JICA Micronesia joined in supporting "Communities Caring for Nature" 2010 clean up the world ceremony at the Pohnpei Governor's Conference Room, on September 17, 2010. JICA Resident Representative, Sasaki Naoyoshi, in his brief remarks, stressed the importance of having a "good plan and implementation," starting with raising the people's awareness in facing difficulties of waste problems in the FSM. In support of this campaign, JICA Volunteer members, posted at three Elementary Schools in Pohnpei, involved their schools' community, teachers and students, by cleaning up their school yards and nearby communities. Trash bags were provided, and trash pickup locations were set up on the roadsides. JICA expects to provide further technical support to the Pohnpei Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as a new JICA Volunteer member will soon be posted with Pohnpei EPA for a two year tenure in the FSM. Additionally, JICA is elaborating a five year waste management project involving the whole of FSM. In the same vein, JICA has sent volunteer members, "Japan Overseas Cooperation Volunteers," with expertise in the field of environmental education, along with their local or state counterpart to the 2010 Regional Training Course in the Field of Environment, organized by JICA, during the week of September 20, 2010, in Fiji. The JICA Volunteer program was established in the FSM in 1989, and the Senior Volunteer program was later added in 2001. The JICA Volunteer program's objective is to provide technical cooperation and actively support work for nation-building and human resource development in the FSM. JICA has been dispatching volunteers into the FSM for over 20 years now, focusing mainly on education and health, but has now expanded to other fields, such as environment, agriculture, and energy, to name just a few.
