FSM Shows Support to Pacific Countries Affected by Recent Natural DisastersPalikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): October 16, 2009 - On October 9th, 2009, President Manny Mori signed Congressional Act No. 16-15 into Public Law No. 16-13 and with this, the FSM National Government committed $80,000 to the Micronesia Red Cross to help with international relief efforts in the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Tonga, Samoa, American Samoa and other disaster sites in the Asia-Pacific Region. During the Second Regular Session of the 16th FSM Congress, following the string of natural disasters in the Asia-Pacific region, members of the Congress held discussions on how best to give aid to the countries recovering from these disasters. Congressional Act No. 16-15 was born out of this discussion. President Mori wrote to Speaker Figir in his transmittal letter of the Public Law and gave his sincere appreciation for the "benevolent initiative of the 16th Congress in passing this act." President Mori joined the Congress in extending sympathy and assistance to FSM's neighboring countries in the region that have been devastated by natural calamities, and he has written to several Heads of State personally extending his condolences. The Micronesia Red Cross will be responsible for sending out the aid to the various nations through their international organization. |
