Pohnpei's World Food Day will be celebrated on October 22, 2010Palikir, Pohnpei (FSM Information Services): October 20, 2010 - Pohnpei will celebrate "World Food Day" on October 22, 2010, at the Pohnpei Botanical Garden in Kolonia, starting at 10:00AM. Pohnpei's theme will be in line with the theme adopted by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization: "United Against Hunger." The members of the 2010 World Food Day Organizing Committee, including representatives from Pohnpei State Agriculture, Pohnpei Department of Education, Pohnpei Health Services, Island Food Community of Pohnpei, US Department of Agriculture's Natural Resources Conservation Service, the Australian Embassy in FSM, and the Conservation Society of Pohnpei have been working hard to make sure the event is a success. On Thursday, October 21, 2010, Lori Dando, Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy, Rihna Jimmy from the Pohnpei Department of Education, and a representative from Island Food Community of Pohnpei, will be judging the cooking competition. All registrants for the competition are expected to bring their dishes to the Pohnpei Department of Agriculture Conference Room tomorrow after 3PM. The competition was broken down into five categories: ripe karat banana recipe, ripe taiwang banana recipe, swamp taro recipe, coconut and "any local food recipe." The recipes will be judged based on the healthy cooking methods used to make the recipe, the healthy ingredients, the taste and look of the dish and, of course, the use of local ingredients. Friday's event will include crop and animal exhibits, as well as cooked local foods. Awards will be presented to exhibit winners, as well as to recipe contest winners, and to the essay winners of the essay contest organized by the Australian Embassy for all 7th and 8th Graders of Pohnpei. The Kitti Seventh Day Adventist Youth Singing Group will be performing during the morning activities. |
