Mori highlighted that this year also marks the 22nd anniversary of the bilateral relations between FSM and Japan. He said: "I am pleased to be here tonight to thank the people and the government of Japan for the generous support and cooperation which you have continued to extend for the past many years, [...] ranging from airport to seaport infrastructure improvement, from student and youth exchange programs to fisheries and agriculture programs." Mori explained that the Pohnpei runway extension project is tentatively scheduled for completion in the summer of 2011. "I sincerely hope that some of you who are here tonight will be part of history in the making as passengers of the first direct flight from Japan to FSM next summer." The State Secretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Yutaka Banno, offered a toast on behalf of the people of Japan and of FSM, in honor of President Mori and FSM's Independence Day Celebration. Amongst much cheer and applause, President Mori was also joined by Yoshiro Mori, former Prime Minister of Japan from 2000 to 2001. |
